Amsterdam is of course the capital of the Netherlands and still manages to keep the record champion of professional football in the capital. AFC Ajax: the advance through Europe
Everyone in the Netherlands is of course familiar with AFC Ajax. The club is the leader in Dutch football with its 34 league titles, 20 KNVB Cups and 11 European Cup victories. The club was founded in 1900 and became the national champion for the first time 18 years later.
AFC Ajax was in the first golden period of Dutch football in the 70s. During this period Johan Cruijff introduced the concept of total football as a mastermind and turned the football world upside down. From 1971 this led to three consecutive European Cup 1 victories and to two World Cup final places for the Dutch national team in '74 and '78. The second golden period came in the 90s when the team won the Champions League with Louis van Gaal as coach and largely self-trained players. After this period, money became increasingly important and it is increasingly difficult for a club in a small league to work their way to the top. Nevertheless, this international success is still possible because AFC Ajax always produces great talents with its youth academy. This is evident from the successful European seasons in 2003, 2017 and 2019.
The youth has the future
AFC Ajax has produced many of the greatest football players from the Netherlands over the years. In the 70s Dutch football shot up and since then AFC Ajax has produced international stars such as Cruijff, Neeskens, Van Basten, Bergkamp, Seedorf, Sneijder, Van der Vaart, Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt. Their own youth academy has always been the lifeblood of the club and this will never change.
Paid football in Amsterdam
Sometimes people wonder how it is possible that Amsterdam only has one professional club while Rotterdam has three. This was not always the case. In 1972 the clubs DWTS, Blauw-Wit and de Volewijckers merged to form the club FC Amsterdam. This club was active in the Eredivisie until 1982 and then went bankrupt. In the ten years that FC Amsterdam was active, it produced four internationals; Jan Jongbloed, Nico Jansen, Chris Dekker and Heini Otto.
