About Marten

My name is Marten, I am 23 years old and I live in Zwolle. I graduated as a media designer at the Cibap in Zwolle and now I enjoy studying at the art academy Minerva in Groningen. For a while I was looking for exactly where my interests lie and something in which I could express my ideas; that was and is really graphic design. I get energy from being creative with images and text. In addition to being creative and my work at Walljar, I have been leading scouting for 5,5 years now, I like to go to festivals and concerts or have a beer with friends!Designer Martin

What does a typical workday look like for you?

My alarm goes off nice and early: at 6 o'clock in the morning! After snoozing twice I get ready to catch the train to Rotterdam at 7:20 am. I'm on the road for about 1,5 hours and I use that time to close my eyes during the train ride.

When I arrive at the office, I always start by checking what is on the schedule. Depending on the assignment, I start by gaining inspiration. After that I am busy designing new collections, social media posts or other visuals. I always use my break to walk for half an hour and get some fresh air. After receiving feedback, I continue until everything has been worked out properly and I am completely satisfied with the end result!

What do you like most about your job?

That it offers me a starting point for my ideas. I experience a lot of pressure in my head and I can express this here in design. I enjoy designing and working on various projects and I also get a lot of satisfaction from it. In addition, I have a pleasant group of colleagues and there is a pleasant, informal atmosphere at the office, which really contributes to my motivation to come all the way from Zwolle to Rotterdam!

Where do you get your inspiration from and how long does it take you to release a new collection?

I get a lot of inspiration from the artists I follow or from the posts shared on Instagram. In addition, there are also many interesting things on Pinterest that help me with the creative process. I need about half an hour to get into the flow and then the designing goes by itself. When my inspiration wanes I get some fresh air or keep looking until I have good ideas to continue with.

The time it takes me depends on the size of the collection and how extensive the design is. Sometimes I really design from 0, and sometimes I edit existing photos or I'm working on texts. This differs per collection, sometimes it takes me a day and sometimes a whole week.

What are your favorite collections?

I am very satisfied with the illustrative landscapes collection that I released! There is a nice balance between calm colors and good, clear design.

Also the city maps collection I like it very much. This collection has been illustrated from 0 and I have been working on this for a really long time. In the end, accessible designs have been released that can find a nice place in every household!
